LOCKDOWN (day too many)…
Scrambling for work, searching for some form of an income, creating content for social media marketing, scouring the internet is boredom and seeing whats out there. These are some of the things that many of us now consider to be a “normal” day during our COVID-19 lockdown.
It is important for all of us to remain mentally stimulated and physically challenged. This not only helps us use some of the time we now have available but increases our strength, fitness, physical health and wellness as well as out mental health and wellness. The benefits of exercise can be listed from now until tomorrow, we see this in a flood of posting on social media platforms, blogs and even vlogs now.
The real question is, how do you determine who is showing you the correct content, who actually has your best interests at heart. What do you follow???
My suggestion would be to check websites, check facebook pages, check qualifications.
I have noticed a massive trend on social media where home based workouts are being created by self proclaimed fitness professionals that purely only work one particular muscle group ie. the chest muscle. This is a pushing movement that is fun to workout and you feel good doing it. One of the downside to over training the chest (front of the body) is pectoral tension, weak rhomboids and eventually an exaggerated upper curvature of the Thoracic spine (condition called Kyphosis). This will eventually lead to injury.
A way to combat these muscular imbalances is to always ensure that for every “pushing” movement you do, you perform a “pulling” movement.
In 1686, Sir Isaac Newton published 3 laws of motion. His third law states for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction”. In order to create balance we need to apply this theory so that all muscles are optimally stimulated and strengthened.
Some examples are:
Quads/Hamstrings
Bicep/Triceps
Pectorals/Rhomboids
Based off of what I have seen on Social media, I have created a resistance band workout to stimulate some of the opposing muscles to what I am seeing do the rounds.
